Cosplay is a type of performance art where people will dress up as their favourite characters from manga and anime, comic books and cartoons, video games, and live-action films. A Japanese journalist coined the term ‘cosplay’ from the English words costume and play, when reporting on people in costume at a 1984 American convention. The hobby started at US scifi conventions in the early 20th century.
These images are the result of a personal project on Cosplayers. Some of the work was made at the EuroCosplay Championships Final in London, where enthusiasts spent months designing their costumes, going to great lengths to add elaborate detail. I am interested in the different professions of the Cosplayers and the “normal lives” to which they return after the costumes are removed. Lawyer to dental student, fashion designer to fireman – people from all walks of life are drawn to the hobby.
