The other Edinburgh Tattoo

Portraits are my favourite thing to shoot. I enjoy trying to bring out something of the character of the subject, and there was no shortage of character at the Edinburgh Tattoo Convention last weekend. I didn’t have a huge time to hang around due to another job, but was happy with the results I did get.

These images were lit with sunlight streaming in from the right, a Canon 580 ex II through an Elinchrom Deep Octa 100 soft box directly from above. There is also a small light (through a gobo) on the hand-painted background and an assistant holding a reflector camera left to put some sun back into the shadows. I like to choose lighting styles that suit the mood of the subject I’m shooting. I use a Canon 5DSR on this type of work because of the huge resolution and latitude in its raw files.
